Interview mit David Davis

Koblenz. 1946. On tour with a repertoire of famous Shakespeare plays, actor-coach Sir Larry suddenly gets stage fright. However, the show has to go on. Will he be able to recover his self-confidence for the performance? Or is the pressure too big and Sir Laurence losing his nerve? He finds his healing in the words of Shakespeare. Based on a true story, this one-man play, conceived and played by David Davies, is a comedic look at the life of touring actors and makes full use of several of Shakespeare's famous speeches.

Since stage fright often occurs in schools , too I thought it is appropriate to ask an expert, which in his opinion are the most important points that contribute to success in acting as well as in school, especially in terms of language learning.

(1) What is acting for you?

Acting is the opportunity to take on another role and empathize with the emotional life and options for action in another context.

(2) So it is similar to everyday life?

Yes exactly. In life, it is often necessary, due to changing conditions, to adapt to the circumstances and to show empathy in the respective situations.

(3) What is your intention behind stage fright?

It is the opportunity to inspire the youth for the play and to create an enthusiasm for the works of Shakespeare.

Instead of reading a summary from the internet, the actual confrontation with the reading offers the possibility to create his own interpretation and to adapt certain facts to one's own life.

(4) What would you advise a student to do who is currently in a position to read one of these works in the classroom?

The most important thing is that they familiarize themselves with the basics. Basics are the basis, which offers perfect control of the possibility to lose fear and to get involved in the individual elements of the book.

After this interview, it becomes apparent how many facets acting can have and what parallels it has to real life. Therefore, it was interesting to get an insight that can be transferred to the context of school and to life. We live in a world of constant change and must, therefore, be flexible and face the changing world. This requires a constant adaptation to new parameters, which is even more needed in the coming years because of globalization and digitalization.

Therefore, it is a pleasure to have experienced someone in our school, who has shown us through a beautiful spectacle, how it is possible to go from a hopeless situation and anxiety to success and self-assurance.

 

STAGEFRIGHT INTERVIEW (GERMAN VERSION)

Koblenz im Jahr 1946. Auf einer Tournee, ausgestattet mit den berühmtesten Shakespeare-Werken, erleidet der Trainer für Schauspiel, namens Sir Larry, plötzlich Lampenfieber.

Allerdings muss die Show weitergehen. Wird er sein Selbstvertrauen für die Aufführung zurückgewinnen? Oder ist der Druck zu groß, so dass er unter seiner Angst zusammenbricht? Auf Basis der Werke von Shakespeare gelingt ihm die Rückkehr zum Selbstvertrauen. Basierend auf einer wahren Geschichte, ist das von David Davies konzipierte und eingespielte Ein-Mann-Stück ein Einblick in das Leben eines Schauspielers unter Einbezug mehrerer berühmter Reden von Shakespeare. 

Da Lampenfieber häufig auch in Schulen auftritt, hielt ich es für angebracht, einen Experten zu befragen, was seiner Meinung nach die wichtigsten Punkte seien, die zum Erfolg im Schauspiel sowie schulischen Bereich und Spracherwerb beitragen. 

(1) Welche Bedeutung messen Sie Schauspiel bei?

„Schauspiel ist die Gelegenheit, eine andere Rolle einzunehmen und sich in die Emotionen und Handlungsoptionen, in einem anderen Kontext, hinein zu fühlen.“

(2) Es treten also Ähnlichkeiten zum Alltag auf?

„Ja genau. Im Leben ist es oft notwendig, sich aufgrund ständig veränderter Bedingungen an die Umstände anzupassen und Empathie in den jeweiligen Situationen aufzubringen.“

(3) Was ist Ihre Absicht hinter Stage Fright?

„Es ist die Gelegenheit, die Jugend für das Schauspiel sowie für die Werke von Shakespeare zu begeistern. Anstatt eine Zusammenfassung aus dem Internet zu lesen, bietet die tatsächliche Auseinandersetzung mit der Lektüre die Möglichkeit, eine eigene Interpretation zu schaffen und bestimmte Erkenntnisse in das eigene Leben zu adaptieren.“

(4) Was raten Sie einem Schüler, die derzeit einer dieser Werke im Unterricht lesen?

„Das Wichtigste ist, dass sie sich mit den Grundlagen vertraut machen. Grundlagen sind die Basis, die es ermöglichen, die Angst vorm Scheitern zu verlieren und sich auf die einzelnen Elemente des Buches einzulassen.“

 

Nach diesem Interview wird deutlich, wie facettenreich Schauspiel sein kann und welche Schnittmengen es zum wirklichen Leben aufweist. Daher war es interessant, diesbezüglich Einblicke zu erhalten, die in den schulischen Kontext und in das Leben übertragen werden können.  Wir leben in einer Welt des ständigen Wandels. Aus diesem Grund müssen wir flexibel sein und uns den sich verändernden Herausforderungen stellen. Dies erfordert eine ständige Anpassung an neue Parameter. Diese Fähigkeit, wird in den kommenden Jahren noch essentieller, aufgrund der Globalisierung und Digitalisierung.

Deshalb war es eine Freude, jemanden in unserer Schule kennenlernen zu dürfen, der uns durch ein wunderschönes Schauspiel gezeigt hat, wie es möglich ist, aus einer hoffnungslosen Situation und Angst zu Erfolg und Selbstsicherheit zu gelangen.
